Book in a Minute:
What would you do if your boss was shot before your eyes and the killer knew you saw him? That is the question Annie Thomas is asking herself as she frantically drives out of town. One decision had put Annie in the wrong place at the wrong time, triggering old painful memories and a desire to run. When she gets pulled over for speeding in a small town by police officer Caleb Winters, he acts casual, but he knows she’s hiding something.
Since Maxwell is a small town, Annie decides to stay a while, mistakenly thinking she is off the grid. But when this miscalculation almost costs her everything, Annie realizes she can’t fight this fight alone. ©MegsMinutes.com
The cover of this book instantly caught my attention – so I was really excited to have the opportunity to join the advanced reader team for the book. When I sat down to read it, I didn’t know much about the plot or the characters – in fact, I had not even read the first book in this series (this is book #2)! But none of that mattered because when I started reading, I was instantly hooked.
And now that I’ve read this story – I’ve added book #1 in the series to my stack of to-be-read books.
As I started reading Devoted Defender, I was impressed by the team work shown by numerous characters! I completely enjoyed seeing them work together. These folks were in a very bad situation. But each of them brought something unique to the story and to the investigation.
Considering all of the main players in the mix, multiple branches of law enforcement were represented and I liked seeing how they approached the situation from different angles. I also liked that there were multiple men in law enforcement who were godly and who had strong character and integrity. Their juxtaposition to the bad guys made the plot have a continually tense feeling.
And speaking of these characters, it was fun to read about a group of close friends who have a shared past (I believe several people are re-occurring characters from the first book). Throughout this book we get glimpses into their shared histories which only add to my thoughts that this story would make a fun action-packed Hallmark mystery movie!
The only thing that I didn’t like were the ‘close calls’ that occurred early in the story. The good guys took way too long to show up both times! But other than that, I thought the plot was intriguing.
I loved the absence of curse words and over-the-line romantic scenes that so often ruin this type of story. Those elements aren’t needed to stay on the edge of your seat in Maxwell… which gives another vote for making this book into a movie!
Devoted Defender has a great re-readability factor and is a high-intensity read. Since it clocks in at a little under 200 pages, it’s a perfect weekend or road-trip read. If you like intriguing police dramas on TV, then you will most definitely like Rachel Dylan’s latest written adventure.
Meg’s Content Cautions:
Overall, this is a clean, tense read. As I mentioned in my review, I would compare Devoted Defender to an intriguing action or police drama without the gore or curse words.
V- There are several situations that involve physical violence including: fighting, murder, attempted murder, guns, and a bomb.
L- There are no curse words used in the book.
S- There is no sexually explicit content.
D- There are a few discussions about drug addiction and its effects. Also, two characters are dealing with memories from troubled pasts, one with corrupt law enforcement and the other with a military experience that ended badly.

Book Character Notes:
Annie Thomas is a single gal who works as a professional personal executive chef. Her current job has brought her more peace and stability than she’s enjoyed in a long time. The Perry’s job has allowed her to explore recipes and after six months, they still like her cooking. But when she sees her boss in a confrontation with a stranger that results in her boss’ death, her life is turned upside down. Not trusting the police, she doesn’t know what to do next.
Doc Perry is a highly successful businessman in Atlanta. Annie enjoys working for Doc and his wife because they give her space to experiment with their cuisine. And since Annie has only heard and seen good things about the Perry’s, she is unable to fathom why anyone would want to murder Doc.
Phil Perry is Doc Perry’s youngest son who seems more interested in being a bachelor than in joining the family business.
Caleb Winters is the chief of police in the town of Maxwell and a retired Navy SEAL. He also enjoys solving problems. His military training and his reliance on God’s leading help him keep his town safe and secure. So when he pulls a lady over for speeding and observes her unsettled demeanor, he is instantly on alert that something isn’t as it seems. But is she running from the law or is something else going on?
Mac Winters is Caleb’s twin brother. He also works in the F.B.I. Mac and his brother are close, so when one gets in trouble, the other will not be far behind. When Caleb gets tangled up in a case Mac’s been working, will it be the break Mac’s been looking for?
Gabby Winters is Caleb and Mac’s little sister. She works as a trained Private Eye. She’s keenly inquisitive and doesn’t back down – even from danger. But even with all her skills, she’ll always have 2 big brothers looking out for her.
Mike Ramsey is the deputy chief in Maxwell and has been on the force for 20 years. While Mike and Caleb didn’t have the best working relationship when Caleb came on board, they seem to have finally worked things out. So when Caleb needs him to help keep the town safe, Mike is more than ready to chip in.
Gabe and Hope Marino are close friends with Caleb and Mac. They live in the town of Maxwell. Gabe works as an F.B.I agent in Atlanta and Hope works as a lawyer in town. When Caleb and Annie need someone to lean on, these two are more than ready to stand with them. (By the way: Gabe and Hope are two of the main characters in the first book, Lethal Action in the Danger in the Deep South series!)
Kane Sloan is a DEA agent. When Caleb and Mac need someone else in their corner, Kane is just the one to call.
Sasha Derring is the District Attorney in Atlanta, Georgia.
